“When I am in nature alone and facing it. It is my favorite place.”

Kazuko Kizawa investigates the spatial experience created by colours and light. She collects lights and sounds in her journeys as material for her installations. During her working process she subjects them to methods of spectrum deconstruction and then uses the colours thus produced as material in her light installations.

Kizawa has collected lights in the different countries and remote locations, like Svalbard Islands, Norway, Iceland, Australia, Canada and most recently Central Finland. Her works are affected by the landscapes, materials and people the artist encounters which merge to become part of the works. The nature in northern regions is especially important for Kizawa, who feels a powerful sense of belonging with it.

Kazuko Kizawa (b. 1968, Niigata, Japan) studied painting at the Tama Art University in Tokyo. She has worked at several residencies around the world, spending the past few years in Finland. Light and colour have been staple themes in her work. Recently she has incorporated also sound as material.
