“By challenging what we take for granted and searching for poetry within our daily lives, we aim to shed new light on spaces and things we already know. Art may not directly change the world, but we hope that our work can change the way we view it.”

Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki observe everyday situations and explore new artistic methods in their work. Recurring themes in their output are the dynamic between performer and audience, a non-hierarchical approach to the elements of performance, and both theatrical and non-theatrical environments. The current object of the artist duo’s interest is the division of space. Their site-specific performances ask how spatial practices affect the way we negotiate and experience private and public spaces.

Heine Avdal is a Norwegian artist living and working in Brussels, Belgium, whose media are contemporary dance, performance, video and visual art. Yukiko Shinozaki is a Japanese artist living and working in Brussels, Belgium. Avdal has created and produced over 20 performative art projects, most of them in collaboration with Yukiko Shinozaki. The duo’s cooperation has lasted over 20 years.
