Daina Ashbee is known for works that unfold at the edge of dance and performance. Through them she addresses topical and taboo issues; feminism in particular is an important object of investigation for her. In addition to space and time, other themes in her output have included violence against women, climate change, and her own menstrual cycle.

For Unrelated, Daina Ashbee created the first choreography of her career. Giving voice to those who do not have a voice, the work invokes identity, cultural poverty, self-destructiveness, tradition and the loss of ritual to investigate cruelty towards women. All these issues are present in the life of indigenous women in Canada and elsewhere in the world.

Dancer and choreographer Daina Ashbee was born on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada in the province of British Columbia. She currently lives in French-speaking Montreal in mainland Canada. Her works have been shown at several international festivals.

Unrelated will be organized in collaboration with Tanssin Aika festival in spring 2021.
