”At the same time as money is trashing the planet, it’s also sucking the soul out of the city. As cities become more unaffordable, they also become more anxious and stressful and less open to non-instrumental thinking.”
– Vikram Uchida-Khanna
Anders Smebye and Vikram Uchida-Khanna question the point of living in modern megacities, which have become non-places. They are concerned about the destruction of nature and our dependency on the monetary system and industrially produced food. Food and food production have been a constant theme for them both since they moved out of the city and began growing their food and hunting and fishing. For them discussion about food and its production is vital.
Anders Smebye (b. 1975, Oslo) divides his time between Rendalen, Norway, and Berlin, Germany. His media of choice are text, textile and sculpture. Vikram Uchida-Khanna (b. 1989, Vancouver, Canada). lives and works in Oslo, Norway, and Haida Gwaii, Canada. Uchida-Khanna writes and makes sculptures. He has collaborated with mask makers from southwestern Canada and has studied the Proto-Indo-European language. Smebye and Uchida-Khanna have produced two plays together.
