“Even when I’m just visiting a place, I’m thrilled by the idea of what if I actually lived there. The feeling is related to the attraction of faraway places, to the sense that a place is alien yet interesting, and of course to dreaming.”

Sonja Löfgren’s works are connected to places she has visited or lived in. She photographs details in urban settings and weaves them into artworks. When she moved to Stockholm Löfgren used the same method to get to know her new home city, and her creative process fused with the process of adaptation.

Löfgren has studied the feeling of belonging to and longing for a place. Even when she depicts a location that viewers have never visited, they may nevertheless find connection to it through their own memories and experiences. The geographic location of a depicted place can lose or change its meaning: a picture from the Pacific can remind a viewer of childhood holidays in the islands in southern Finland.

Sonja Löfgren was born in Espoo in 1978, and she lives and works in Stockholm. She graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) in Stockholm in 2017. Since 2010 her main medium has been embroidery. Löfgren describes her practice as sketching with needle and thread.
